SkillDepot Review: An In-Depth Overview

What is it?

SkillDepot is a marketplace and management layer for AI agent skills. It is built for developers and AI builders who want their agents to use reusable abilities without loading too much unnecessary context every time. Instead of keeping all instructions inside one large prompt, SkillDepot helps store, search, share, and monetize agent skills in a cleaner way. The project is designed around MCP-compatible agents and supports tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaw, and Gemini.

How it works

SkillDepot stores skills as Markdown files with structured frontmatter. These skills are indexed locally using embeddings, so an AI agent can search by meaning and pull only the skill it needs for the current task. This keeps the agent’s context lighter and more focused. The system offers different detail levels: a short search snippet, a structured preview, and the full skill content. Agents can also learn new information, save new skills, update existing ones, delete old skills, and rebuild the index when needed. It runs locally with SQLite and a local transformer model, so users do not need cloud APIs just to manage their skill library.

Case Studies

A developer working on many projects can use SkillDepot to keep reusable instructions for tasks like deploying a Next.js app, setting up CI, or fixing common framework issues. Instead of repeating the same instructions in every chat, the agent searches the skill library and loads the right guide only when needed.

A small AI tools team can use it to build a shared skill marketplace. Team members can create useful agent skills, organize them, and make them available to others.

A solo builder can also use SkillDepot as a local memory system. For example, when an agent learns a project-specific rule or a common bug fix, it can save that knowledge as a skill and reuse it later without bloating every conversation.
