Parlune Review: An In-Depth Overview

Most language apps teach you through lessons and exercises designed specifically for learners. Parlune takes a different approach: you learn from the YouTube videos you actually want to watch — podcasts, interviews, vlogs, news, and anything else you would normally put on.

Paste in a YouTube URL and Parlune transcribes the audio itself. It doesn't rely on YouTube's subtitles.

That's important because subtitles are often much worse than you'd expect. We sampled 392 YouTube videos across ten languages and found that only 5.1% of Spanish videos had human-written subtitles, while 30.8% of Arabic videos had no text in the language at all. The alternative is usually YouTube's automatic captions, which often have no punctuation or sentence breaks and can be difficult to study from.

By transcribing the audio directly, Parlune can turn any video into clean, properly punctuated study material, regardless of whether the video came with good subtitles.

The transcript is synced to the audio word by word, so you can follow along as the person speaks. You can use Immersion Mode to listen and follow the highlighted text, or switch to Interactive Mode when you want to slow down, read and explore the language.

Tap any word to see what it means in context, along with examples and the sentence it came from. If it's useful, save it with a single click.

And this is where Parlune goes beyond a typical transcript or flashcard app. Saved words and sentences become part of 11 short review games covering listening, recall, recognition, comprehension and spelling. They're scheduled using spaced repetition and use the original speaker's voice.

So when you review a word, you're hearing it in real speech again — with the same accent, voice and delivery you heard in the video — rather than learning it from an isolated flashcard.

Parlune supports 30 study languages, with translations into English. It runs entirely in your browser, so there's nothing to install.

Plans are based on hours of new video rather than the number of videos you watch, and once you've processed something, you can review your saved material as much as you like. Plans start at $14.99/month for 10 hours of new content.
