AI Tool FAQ: Answers to top questions about Referent.
Who is Referent built for?
Referent is mostly built for the solo lawyers, and small law firms, boutique firms, and growing legal teams that want to reduce daily admin work. It is especially useful for firms where lawyers or small teams handle intake, follow-ups, matter updates, document filing, and task management themselves. The platform is not only a place to store client and case information. Its main value is that AI agents help run routine operations while the lawyer stays in control of important actions.
Does Referent replace a legal CRM or practice management system?
Referent can act as a legal CRM and practice management platform in one place. It is designed to manage leads, intake, clients, matters, tasks, documents, billing preparation, and follow-ups. What makes it different from a traditional CRM is the AI execution layer. Instead of only recording information, Referent can help update matter records, create tasks, route work, organize emails and files, and prepare next steps for review.
Can the AI send emails or take actions without lawyer approval?
Referent idea is designed around lawyer approval. The AI agents can prepare the work, but the client-facing or high-risk actions are not meant to leave the firm without the lawyer’s sign-off. This is important for legal teams because trust, accuracy, and professional responsibility matter. The platform also records actions in an audit trail, so the firm can review what happened and keep better control over AI-assisted work.
What tools does Referent connect with?
Referent currently highlights integrations with Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive. This allows the platform to connect emails, calendar events, and documents to the right matters. That makes it a better fit for firms already using Google Workspace. Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft 365 are listed as coming soon, so firms that rely fully on Microsoft may want to check availability before choosing it.
Is client and firm data used to train AI models?
Referent states that it does not train AI models on a firm’s data and does not sell client information. Its privacy policy also says synced Google data is deleted when the relevant Google account is disconnected, and account deletion removes personal data and workspace content within 30 days, except where legal retention rules apply. For law firms, this is one of the most important points to check before using any AI legal software.
